I started washing dishes at 13, saved my money, and bought my first video camera. I shot everything (which meant surfing, skateboarding and underage parties). After taking video production courses in high school, I Graduated from Full Sail in Orlando Florida with a science degree in film making. Originally from St. Augustine, I stayed in Florida just long enough to make my first feature length documentary with, burgeoning punk band, Against Me. We’re Never Going Home (2002) was met with both critical and commercial success within the indie music scene.
Soon after I moved to New York where I’d team up with new friends from Vice to help finish The Vice Guide to Travel and start vbs.tv, the companies first foray into video. After working across the board shooting, producing, and editing, I finally settled on a path behind the camera just in time to meet up with my now wife Meredith Danluck. We’ve been close collaborators making feature docs sailing the pacific (Garbage Island, 2007), riding horseback through the American badlands (The Ride, 2009), and Trekking into the Arctic (Art Hard, 2011). We even took our first jump into narrative together (North of South West of East, 2013 and Clavadista 2018) I spent 7 years as the director of Photography for Vice’s Emmy award winning TV Series, VICE on HBO. In that time i helped craft over 100 short documentaries in 78 countries, Since then I picked up another Emmy on the Hulu Version of that same show, and have shot a few episodes of the now Showtime version.
When production was halted for the global pandemic, I created a remote video conference based interview show with Vice founder Shane Smith called Shelter in Place, where I held every position on the physical set for 10 episodes, delivering to network in the same week it was shot. Most recently I’ve been Shooting and co-directing with Alex Chitty on various long form doc projects like, The Vice Guide to Iran (2019), Red Sea Mission (2023), and Flowerman (2023). In addition Alex and I have been working on various branded campaigns, and I’ve been expanding further into narrative on a few works in progress.
